When you’re struggling to sleep , you often hear doctors talk about sleep hygiene, but to me, that phrase has always sounded a bit unrelaxing almost clinical, like something prescribed rather than something you look forward to. That’s why I prefer to think of it as a relaxation routine.
To me, it’s not about strict rules before bed. It’s about creating a gentle, calming space that helps you unwind and drift off naturally. When you feel relaxed, you’re much more likely to enjoy a deeper, more restful night’s sleep and even stay asleep through the night.
My relaxation routine isn’t fixed. It changes often and grows organically over time. I enjoy variety, and I don’t believe it needs to be long or complicated. A few small steps can make a real difference.
Here are some of the simple things I turn to, often just for a few minutes:
- Candle meditation – A few minutes of soft light and stillness help quieten my mind
- Self-massage with essential oils (usually lavender)
- Deep breathing exercises
- Gentle yoga
- Creative corner time – drawing, writing, or just making something
- A few minutes of stargazing
- Reading a few pages of a book
- Listening to soothing music

The key for me is flexibility choosing what feels right in the moment and listening to my intuition rather than following a rigid routine. It’s about creating a sense of calm, not pressure.
Even the smallest thing can signal to your body that it’s time to slow down, let go of the day, and rest.
Hopefully, this will help you enjoy a deep sleep and wake up feeling refreshed and rested.
